Maca refers to the powdered root of the maca plant. There are a number of varieties of maca roots; different colours of root being associated with different properties.

Health considerations

Maca root has been marketed as an energy-promoting supplement as well as an aphrodisiac; firm evidence for these claims is not yet apparent. Dark coloured maca root is a significant source of iodine. Red maca has been seen to reduce prostate size in animals with induced prostate overgrowth—a model for prostate cancer risk.
