Definition

Pomegranates are a red fruit filled with arils, or seeds. The arils are entirely edible, though some consume only the tart red pulp, the sarcotesta. See: Pomegranate juice.

Health considerations

Consuming the whole aril increases the fiber consumed. Pomegranates are low in sugar and a source of vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate. They contain small amounts of copper, manganese, and potassium. See: Pomegranate juice.
