Health considerations

Polysorbate 20 is considered safe and has no adverse effects reported at the levels present in food. Polysorbate 20 may aggravate propylene glycol sensitivity. In studies of rats fed polysorbate 20 as 25% of their diet for two months, some developed anemia, tissue damage, and kidney stones.

Keep in mind

The fatty acids used to synthesize polysorbates may come from animal sources. If this is of concern, consumers should contact manufacturers.
