Definition

Blackberries are the dark red to purple-black fruit of a variety of plants of the Rubus genus.

Health considerations

Blackberries are high in fiber and relatively low in sugar, and a source of vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, and small amounts of other vitamins and minerals. Blackberries are rich in antioxidant polyphenols such as anthocyanins and the fairly uncommon ellagitannins. Extracts and specific compounds present in raspberries have shown multiple health benefits in laboratory testing, such as reduced weight gain on a high-fat diet, decreased oxidative stress, and decreased inflammation.

Keep in mind

It is always difficult to attribute specific health benefits to particular foods given the variety in every human diet.
