Definition

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant and assists in the production of collagen in the body. This vitamin also helps maintain the immune system and aids in the absorption of iron.

Health considerations

A deficiency in this vitamin brings about a condition called scurvy. People with this condition can experience poor wound healing, reopening of previously healed wounds, bone and joint aches, bone fractures, improperly formed and loose teeth, weakened blood vessels, ruptured capillaries, bleeding around hair follicles, bleeding gums, easy bruising, and anemia (due to reduced iron absorption capacity). Overconsumption of Vitamin C generally does not cause any symptoms, but in some cases it may cause diarrhaea, nausea and abdominal cramps. Though, high intake of this vitamin should be avoided by individuals prone to kidney stones as it may cause kidney stones.
