Definition

Onions are bulbous vegetables of the Allium genus. Like their relative garlic, onions are common allergens.

Health considerations

Onions are a significant source of a variety of polyphenols, notably phenolic acids and flavonoids. Onions are a common allergen; it is not uncommon for an individual to be allergic to raw but not cooked onion, though others are allergic to it in both raw and cooked form.
