Caseins are a family of proteins found in milks. Casein protein isolate is also a common sports nutrition supplement, as a slow-digesting alternative to whey.
Casein is proposed as being the primary allergen in milk products (lactose intolerance not being an allergy, technically speaking). The casein in cow’s milk may differ in structure from that found in cow’s or breast milk, allowing for allergies only to cow’s milk. Some studies suggest that casein within milk interferes with the polyphenols found in tea, limiting the cardiovascular health benefits associated with tea consumption.
Some studies have suggested that a casein- and gluten-free diet may improve symptoms in autism spectrum disorders.
