Definition

Strawberries are the red, seed-covered fruit of the Fragaria ananassa plant. There are multiple cultivars of varying size, colour, shape, flavor, and sweetness.

Health considerations

Strawberries are relatively low in sugar and a source of fiber, vitamin C, manganese, and small amounts of other vitamins and minerals. Strawberries are rich in antioxidant polyphenols such as anthocyanins and the fairly uncommon ellagitannins. Health benefits thought to be associated with strawberry consumption include prevention of inflammation, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and neurodegeneration.
