Herbicides are a type of pesticide used to kill or inhibit the growth of unwanted plants, i.e. weeds. They are used in agriculture to treat or prevent competing plants from growing among crops. Some natural herbicides exist for use in organic farming, but synthetic herbicides are the most prevalent.
Individual herbicide compounds have unique health effects. Residue levels vary in produce, crops, and groundwater.
Herbicides may contribute to soil contamination and surface runoff of toxic chemicals into water sources. Herbicides have been associated with multiple negative ecological effects.
