Definition

Sweet cherries are the stone fruit of cultivars of the Prunus avium tree. These include Bing, Rainier, and Sweetheart.

Health considerations

Sweet cherries contain antioxidants, vitamins C, A, E, and K, as well as potassium. Cherries have anti-inflammatory effects, lower circulating levels of inflammation markers, and may decrease gout attacks, an increasingly common disease.

Keep in mind

Sweet cherries have a somewhat greater sugar content than tart cherries, but the same glycemic index.
