Definition

Spearmint or Mentha spicata is species of mint used primarily for savory dishes and alcoholic beverages such as mint juleps. Spearmint has pointed, spear-like leaves.

Health considerations

Spearmint tea, made from brewed spearmint leaves, is antimutagenic and carcinoprotective. It is also anti-androgenic and has been used to treat hirsutism in cases of polycystic ovarian syndrome, though long-term studies have not yet confirmed effectiveness in balancing hormone levels. The anti-androgenic properties of spearmint, however, have been shown to affect sperm production in rats. Spearmint oil has antibacterial properties, including against pathogenic and antibiotic-resistant strains, as well as antifungal and antioxidant properties.
