Definition

See: Coconut Oil, Virgin. Refined coconut oil is the more processed version of virgin coconut oil. To make refined coconut oil producers take virgin coconut oil, bleach it, heat it to high temperatures, treat it with sodium hydroxide and then hydrogenate it. These processes kill fungi spores and bacteria, as well as serving to deodorize the product and extend its shelf life.

Health considerations

See: Coconut Oil, Virgin. Refined coconut oil has not proven to provide the same nutritional and medicinal benefits as virgin coconut oil, though the benefits are still present, only less potent.
